The new Gay Street is the first step in a reinvented roadway network for Downtown Columbus. For too long a one-way cut-through between major access roads, Gay Street has been converted into the two-way spine of an emerging downtown neighborhood. The improved and expanded sidewalks are bordered by rain gardens that sensitively treat the stormwater run-off while providing a buffer for the many outdoor seating areas that have emerged from local restaurants. A raised urban median bursts to life each spring with flowering trees and helps to slow traffic speeds throughout the year.
